Paul Dano Joins Parker Finn’s Possession Remake
One of the most anticipated horror remakes in development has just become even more exciting.
Paul Dano has officially joined the cast of Parker Finn’s upcoming remake of Possession, adding another acclaimed performer to a project that is already attracting enormous attention from horror fans.
Deadline broke the news that The Batman actor has signed on to the film, although details surrounding his character remain firmly under wraps.

The remake is being written and directed by Parker Finn, who burst onto the horror scene with 2022’s Smile before following it up with the hugely successful Smile 2. Across both films, Finn demonstrated a talent for blending psychological trauma with unsettling supernatural horror, making him a fascinating choice to tackle one of the most revered and emotionally challenging horror films ever made.
Released in 1981, Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession has become a genuine cult masterpiece. Set in Cold War-era West Berlin, the film follows a married couple whose relationship deteriorates into an increasingly surreal and horrifying nightmare, blurring the lines between psychological breakdown, supernatural terror and emotional devastation.
Far more than a conventional horror film, Possession is widely regarded as an intense exploration of grief, jealousy, obsession and the collapse of a marriage. Its dreamlike imagery, shocking practical effects and emotionally raw performances have helped cement its reputation as one of the most unique horror films ever produced.
Much of that reputation rests on Isabelle Adjani’s extraordinary performance, which earned her the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival. Alongside Sam Neill, the pair delivered performances that remain among the most emotionally exhausting and uncompromising ever committed to film.

For many horror fans, Possession isn’t simply a classic; it’s considered untouchable.
That makes Parker Finn’s remake one of the boldest projects currently in development.
Fortunately, the casting has inspired confidence. Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner will lead the film as the troubled couple at the centre of the story, with Adjani herself publicly giving her blessing to Qualley’s casting, a significant endorsement considering the iconic status of her original performance.
Paul Dano now joins that impressive ensemble.

Although his role has yet to be revealed, Dano has built a career playing complex, unpredictable and psychologically layered characters. Whether portraying the chilling Riddler in The Batman, the manipulative preacher Eli Sunday in There Will Be Blood, or emotionally fragile characters in films such as Little Miss Sunshine, Prisoners and Love & Mercy, he has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to bring quiet intensity to every performance.
Interestingly, despite appearing in science fiction films including Looper and Okja, this marks Dano’s first venture into the horror genre.
Behind the scenes, the remake also boasts an experienced production team. Finn is producing alongside Jonathan Fass through Bad Feeling, while Roy Lee and Andrew Childs produce through Vertigo Entertainment. Robert Pattinson is also attached as a producer, with Marc Bienstock serving as executive producer.
Although story details remain tightly guarded, Finn has already shown through the Smile films that he understands how to build unbearable tension while exploring psychological trauma. Those qualities could make him uniquely suited to reinterpret Possession for a modern audience while respecting the emotional intensity that made Żuławski’s original so unforgettable.

Remaking a film as beloved and uncompromising as Possession will undoubtedly divide opinion, but with Parker Finn behind the camera and a cast led by Margaret Qualley, Callum Turner and now Paul Dano, the project continues to build serious momentum.
For now, horror fans will simply have to wait and see what role Dano plays in what is shaping up to be one of the genre’s most intriguing upcoming releases.
