Leslie Vernon Is Back as Behind the Mask II Finally Moves Forward
Twenty years after Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon introduced horror fans to one of the genre’s smartest and strangest modern slashers, the long discussed sequel is finally happening. Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon was officially announced at a 20th anniversary screening at the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Los Angeles, with director Scott Glosserman and writer David J. Stieve confirming that Leslie is coming back. The news was first reported by Variety.
The sequel will reunite key players from the original film. Glosserman and Stieve are both returning, while Nathan Baesel is back as Leslie Vernon, Angela Goethals returns as Taylor Gentry, and Robert Englund will once again play Doc Halloran. Producer backing is coming from Paper Street Pictures, led by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns, with Adam F. Goldberg also serving as an executive producer.

The original Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon arrived in 2006 and quickly built a cult reputation for its mockumentary format and its playful but affectionate deconstruction of slasher movie rules. The film follows an eager young killer, Leslie Vernon, who invites a documentary crew to observe how he plans and prepares for his own future reign of terror in the sleepy town of Glen Echo. That setup let the film poke fun at horror traditions while also working as a genuine slasher in its own right, which is a big part of why fans have kept it alive for two decades.
In comments shared after the announcement, Glosserman made it clear that the sequel exists because the audience never let the first film die. He said fans kept the movie alive by sharing it, quoting it, and introducing it to others, and that the follow-up is happening because of that support. He also said the new film is moving ahead regardless, but that a newly launched Kickstarter campaign will help determine how ambitious it can become, with the extra support allowing for larger set pieces, more cameos, and more surprises.

That Kickstarter angle is an interesting one, but it does not mean the sequel is some vague wish list. Multiple reports make it clear the film is already in motion, with the crowdfunding campaign intended to help scale it up rather than make it exist in the first place. Rue Morgue also reports that much of the original creative team is coming back, including composer Gordy Haab and cinematographer Jaron Presant, which should be reassuring news for fans who wanted the sequel to feel connected to the first film rather than just borrow the title.
Behind The Mask II Finally Coming
There have been attempts to continue Leslie Vernon’s story before, and that is part of why this announcement feels significant. AV Club notes that the project went through earlier reboot and sequel iterations that never came together. Now, with the anniversary spotlight and the original cast returning, the timing finally seems right. The same report also says the new film is set 20 years later, revisiting Leslie and Taylor after all that time, which sounds like the right way to bring this story back instead of pretending no time has passed.

For horror fans, this is one of those sequel announcements that actually means something. Behind the Mask was never just another indie slasher. It was a clever, funny, affectionate film that understood why people love slashers in the first place. Now the sequel has a chance to do something equally tricky. It has to return after twenty years, satisfy a devoted cult audience, and prove Leslie Vernon still belongs in the conversation. Thankfully, if anyone knows how much cardio that will take, it is Leslie himself.
