Neve Campbell Confirms Sidney Prescott Will Return in Scream 8
Ghostface can change faces, motives and apparently entire generations of victims, but Sidney Prescott continues to be considerably harder to get rid of. Neve Campbell has officially confirmed that she will return for Scream 8, putting to rest one of the biggest questions surrounding the next instalment in the long-running slasher franchise.
The film remains in development, with plenty still unknown about exactly where Ghostface is heading next, but Sidney will once again be there when the killing starts. Campbell confirmed her involvement while speaking to the Associated Press about her upcoming projects, casually listing Scream 8 among the work she has on the horizon.
When pressed for details, Campbell understandably wasn’t prepared to start handing out Ghostface’s secrets. “You know I can never tell you anything about Scream 8,” she joked, before providing the important part by confirming: “I’ll be in it.”
It means Campbell is preparing for her seventh appearance as Sidney Prescott across eight Scream films. Nearly three decades after Wes Craven first introduced us to Sidney, the character remains at the centre of a franchise that has repeatedly tried to move forward without completely letting go of its past.

Neve Campbell Scream 8 Return Follows a Record-Breaking Sequel
Campbell’s continued involvement would once have been far from guaranteed. After appearing in the first five films, she declined to return for 2023’s Scream VI following a salary dispute, explaining publicly that she felt the offer presented to her did not reflect the value she had brought to the franchise.
Scream VI therefore became the first theatrical instalment without Sidney Prescott. Melissa Barrera’s Sam Carpenter and Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter instead led the New York-set sequel, alongside Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy and Mason Gooding’s Chad, allowing the newer characters introduced in 2022’s Scream to carry a film largely without the original generation.
Behind the scenes, the direction of Scream 7 subsequently changed dramatically. Barrera was fired from the project in November 2023 following social media posts concerning the Israel-Gaza conflict, while Ortega also departed the sequel, with scheduling issues among the reasons reported for her absence.
Campbell ultimately returned to the franchise, while original Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson stepped behind the camera to direct a story once again built around Sidney and her family. The seventh film consequently represented a substantial shift away from the Carpenter sisters and back towards the character who had been running from Ghostface since 1996.
Commercially, that return proved extremely successful, with Scream 7 passing $200 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing entry in the franchise without adjusting for inflation. Its critical reception was considerably less enthusiastic, however, creating an interesting contrast between the film’s box-office performance and the response from reviewers.
Whatever individual fans thought of the seventh instalment, Sidney Prescott clearly remains a major attraction for audiences. Campbell’s confirmation also means Scream 8 will not have to spend its development period wondering whether its most famous survivor is going to answer the phone.

Neve Campbell Scream 8 Sequel Has New Writers
Campbell’s return remains one of the few concrete details currently known about Scream 8. Lilla and Nora Zuckerman are writing the screenplay, with the sisters bringing television experience that includes Poker Face, Fringe, Suits, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Prodigal Son.
Kevin Williamson is not expected to return to the director’s chair after making his feature directorial debut with Scream 7, although he remains an important figure within the franchise. A director for the eighth film has not yet been announced, while there is currently no confirmed release date or publicly revealed production start.
Campbell also hasn’t revealed how heavily Sidney will feature in the story, and the wider returning cast has yet to be fully established. That leaves plenty of questions surrounding whether the eighth film will continue directly from the events and family storyline of Scream 7 or take Sidney and Ghostface in another direction.
The franchise has certainly survived major creative changes before. Wes Craven directed the original four films before his death in 2015, with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett eventually bringing Scream back to cinemas in 2022 and successfully combining Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette with a new generation of characters.

Now another creative transition is underway, but one element isn’t changing. Sidney Prescott will be back for Scream 8, and after everything Ghostface has thrown at her since 1996, you’d think whoever puts that mask on next might finally consider choosing somebody else.
