Callum Vinson Cast as Young Jason Voorhees in Peacock’s ‘Crystal Lake’ Prequel Series

A new name is entering horror legend. Rising star Callum Vinson has officially been cast as young Jason Voorhees in Crystal Lake, Peacock’s upcoming prequel series to the iconic Friday the 13th franchise. The casting marks a major turning point in the show’s production, giving fans their first real glimpse at the direction the series will take in exploring Jason’s formative years — before the hockey mask, the machete, and the mayhem.
Vinson, a relative newcomer, has secured one of horror’s most infamous roles. Though Jason is typically remembered as the silent, masked killer of later sequels, Crystal Lake promises to peel back the layers and introduce audiences to the boy he once was — a child bullied, misunderstood, and fated for tragedy. Set before the events of the original 1980 film, this prequel will reportedly delve into the emotional and psychological roots of the character, possibly reimagining his death and his bond with his mother in a whole new light.
A Young Face for a Legendary Villain
Vinson’s casting gives the series a youthful focal point and offers the opportunity to reinterpret the mythos from a more human angle. This won’t be the unstoppable killing machine Jason of Jason Lives or Freddy vs. Jason. Instead, Crystal Lake aims to ground its story in emotion, exploring Jason’s childhood and the events that would ultimately turn Camp Crystal Lake into a blood-soaked horror landmark.

Enter Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees
While Vinson leads the charge as young Jason, the always-excellent Linda Cardellini steps into the shoes of Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s fiercely protective mother. Originally portrayed by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 classic, Pamela was the franchise’s first killer, seeking revenge on negligent camp counsellors who allowed her son to drown. Cardellini’s casting has been previously confirmed, and her deep range — from Dead to Me to Brokeback Mountain — makes her a compelling fit for one of horror’s most tragic and terrifying maternal figures.
Expect her version of Pamela to be emotionally rich, possibly more sympathetic, and just as chilling. Her relationship with young Jason will likely be central to the series, adding psychological nuance to the mythology in a way the films have only hinted at.
Supporting Cast & Production
Joining Vinson and Cardellini are Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem), Cameron Scoggins (Nashville, Shades of Blue), and newcomer Gwendolyn Sundstrom in undisclosed roles. With such a mix of emerging and seasoned talent, Crystal Lake seems poised to honour the franchise while treading fresh ground.
Behind the scenes, Crystal Lake boasts an impressive creative team. A24, known for genre-defining films like Hereditary, Talk to Me, and The Witch, is producing the series with a full executive producer slate: Brad Caleb Kane, Marc Toberoff, Victor Miller (original Friday the 13th screenwriter), Robert and Robert M. Barsamian, and Stuart Manashil.
Directors for the first season include:
- Michael Lennox (Episodes 101–103)
- Celine Held & Logan George (Episodes 104–106)
- Quyen Tran (Episodes 107–108)
Bryan Fuller’s Exit and the Road Ahead
The series had its share of behind-the-scenes turbulence. Originally developed by genre visionary Bryan Fuller (Hannibal), the project hit a snag when Fuller exited, citing creative differences with A24. “For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” he stated in 2023. Despite the setback, production has since resumed at full pace, with Vinson’s casting breathing new excitement into the project.
What to Expect
Set before Jason’s supposed drowning, Crystal Lake is expected to explore the formative trauma that led to one of horror’s most enduring legends. It’s not about hockey masks or supernatural resurrections (at least not yet). Instead, this is a deep dive into grief, isolation, and how monsters are made — not born.
Fans still awaiting a premiere date can rest assured that Crystal Lake is shaping up to be more than just a nostalgic cash-in. With A24’s signature polish and a focus on character-driven storytelling, it could prove to be the most ambitious Friday the 13th project in decades.
