Night of the Comet and Masters of the Universe Lead 88 Films’ November 4K Slate
88 Films has revealed its November 2026 line-up, and there is plenty here for cult movie collectors. The label has three new 4K Ultra HD releases on the way, led by the 1980s favourites Night of the Comet and Masters of the Universe, alongside a UHD upgrade for Gamer. Jean-Claude Van Damme also joins the party with Death Warrant on Blu-ray, while 88 Films is taking another trip into the world of 3D with a separate 3D Blu-ray edition of Gamer.
Pre-orders for the November releases are set to open on 27 August, and for horror fans the most exciting announcement is surely the arrival of Night of the Comet on 4K Ultra HD.
Released in 1984 and written and directed by Thom Eberhardt, Night of the Comet is one of those films that seemingly decided choosing a single genre was unnecessary. Part post-apocalyptic science fiction movie, part zombie horror, part comedy and unmistakably a product of the 1980s, it stars Catherine Mary Stewart and Kelli Maroney as sisters Regina “Reggie” and Samantha Belmont.
After Earth passes through the tail of a comet, most of the population is reduced to piles of red dust. Reggie survives after spending the night inside the steel-lined projection booth of a cinema, while Samantha has also escaped the catastrophe. Unfortunately, those who weren’t completely vaporised aren’t necessarily doing particularly well either, and the sisters soon discover that some survivors have become dangerous zombie-like creatures.
Robert Beltran co-stars as Hector, while Mary Woronov and Geoffrey Lewis appear as members of a scientific group whose intentions give the survivors something else to worry about.
Night of the Comet has enjoyed an enduring cult following, helped enormously by the chemistry between Stewart and Maroney and its unusual combination of end-of-the-world horror and teenage comedy. Its deserted Los Angeles locations and striking red skies give the film a distinctive appearance that should make the new UHD presentation particularly interesting. According to 88 Films’ announcement, the November edition will be available on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, with HDR advertised on the packaging.
Then there’s Masters of the Universe, Gary Goddard’s wonderfully excessive 1987 attempt to bring He-Man into live-action.
Dolph Lundgren stars as He-Man, with Frank Langella disappearing beneath the make-up as Skeletor. The battle for Castle Grayskull ultimately sends He-Man and his companions from Eternia to Earth, where teenagers Julie Winston and Kevin Corrigan – played by Courteney Cox and Robert Duncan McNeill – become caught up in the conflict.
Masters of the Universe was produced by Cannon Films and failed to become the major theatrical franchise-starter that had been hoped for, but its reputation has changed considerably over the decades. For many fans, it has become an enormously enjoyable piece of 1980s fantasy filmmaking, packed with elaborate costumes, creatures, sets and practical effects. Langella’s completely committed Skeletor has also become one of the film’s defining features.
88 Films has released Masters of the Universe before, including a feature-packed Blu-ray containing interviews with Lundgren, Goddard, producer Ed Pressman, co-writer Stephen Tolkin and production designer William Stout. The newly announced November edition, however, takes things considerably further.
According to the information supplied by 88 Films, the four-disc set includes a never-before-seen preview cut and comes in a rigid slipcase featuring original quad poster artwork. The announcement confirms both 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray discs, making this a significant upgrade rather than simply another repackaging of the existing edition.
Interestingly, 88 Films had already indicated earlier this year that a UK 4K was being worked on. In May, an official representative said the company was waiting for paperwork before it could make an announcement. Now the wait is over.
The third 4K release is Gamer, the 2009 science-fiction action film written and directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Gerard Butler stars as Kable, a death-row prisoner being remotely controlled by a teenage gamer as part of Slayers, an enormously popular game in which real human beings are used as combatants.
Michael C. Hall plays the technology mogul responsible for the system, with Amber Valletta, Logan Lerman, Terry Crews and Ludacris among the supporting cast. The film’s deliberately frantic editing, violence and technological dystopia made Gamer a particularly aggressive piece of late-2000s genre cinema, although its central idea of technology allowing people to control the lives and bodies of others has arguably become more pertinent in the years since its release.
88 Films is bringing Gamer to 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray, but there’s an additional curiosity for physical-media collectors: the company is also releasing it on 3D Blu-ray. It isn’t entirely out of character for the label either; 88 Films released Magnificent Bodyguards in 3D and 2D earlier in 2026.
Rounding out November is Death Warrant, the 1990 action thriller starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. Directed by Deran Sarafian from a screenplay by a young David S. Goyer, the film sees Van Damme playing Detective Louis Burke, who is sent undercover into a prison to investigate a series of murders.
Waiting for him inside is Christian “The Sandman” Naylor, played by Patrick Kilpatrick, a psychotic killer Burke believed he had already dealt with. What follows mixes the prison thriller with the martial-arts action that audiences were increasingly expecting from Van Damme as his career gathered momentum around the turn of the decade.
For 88 Films, then, November is shaping up to be an unusually varied month: Night of the Comet, Masters of the Universe and Gamer on 4K UHD, Gamer additionally returning in 3D, and Death Warrant joining the label’s Blu-ray catalogue.
But we’re calling it now: Night of the Comet in 4K and that four-disc Masters of the Universe set are going to be very difficult for cult movie collectors to resist.
