Jackie Earle Haley and Michael Gandolfini Join the Cast of They Follow
The cast of They Follow, the long-awaited sequel to David Robert Mitchell’s acclaimed 2014 horror film It Follows, continues to grow, with an impressive lineup of new faces officially joining the project.
According to Deadline, genre veteran Jackie Earle Haley and rising star Michael Gandolfini are among several actors who have signed on for the highly anticipated sequel, which is expected to begin filming this summer.
Joining Haley and Gandolfini are Justine Lupe (Succession), Anna Mirodin (Ivan), Jayne Taini (Unbelievable), Tom Pecinka (Stereophonic), Melora Walters (Magnolia), Ben Krieger (Song Sung Blue), Natalie Shinnick (The Brutalist) and Jan Hoag (The Fabelmans). It has also previously been confirmed that Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice) will appear in the sequel.
While the identities of the new characters remain a mystery, Deadline reports that the film takes place ten years after the events of the original, with plot details otherwise being kept firmly under wraps.

An Impressive Cast for One of Horror’s Most Anticipated Sequels
The addition of Jackie Earle Haley will undoubtedly excite horror fans. Haley is no stranger to the genre, having portrayed Freddy Krueger in the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, while also appearing in Alita: Battle Angel, Watchmen, Shutter Island and earning an Academy Award nomination for Little Children.
Meanwhile, Michael Gandolfini continues to carve out an impressive career of his own. The son of the late James Gandolfini, Michael first attracted widespread attention portraying a young Tony Soprano in The Many Saints of Newark, before going on to roles in Daredevil: Born Again, Bob Marley: One Love and Warfare. His addition suggests They Follow is assembling a cast capable of matching the emotional weight that made the original film so memorable.
With Maika Monroe returning as Jay and David Robert Mitchell once again writing and directing, the sequel is rapidly becoming one of the most anticipated horror releases currently in production.

Returning to One of Modern Horror’s Most Original Films
When It Follows premiered in 2014, it quickly established itself as one of the defining horror films of the decade.
Rather than relying on excessive jump scares or graphic violence, David Robert Mitchell crafted an unsettling supernatural nightmare centred around a simple but terrifying concept: after a sexual encounter, an entity begins following its victim at a slow, relentless pace. It can look like anyone, it never stops walking, and once it reaches you, it kills.
The premise proved remarkably effective because it transformed ordinary everyday spaces into places of dread. Long, lingering shots constantly forced audiences to scan the background, wondering whether the figure slowly approaching was just another pedestrian—or death itself.
Combined with Mike Gioulakis’ haunting cinematography, an unforgettable electronic score by Disasterpeace, and Maika Monroe’s vulnerable central performance, It Follows became both a critical and commercial success, cementing its reputation as one of the finest original horror films of the 2010s.

The Threat Is Growing
While story details remain secret, one intriguing piece of information has already emerged.
The original film focused almost entirely on Jay’s desperate attempt to survive after inheriting the supernatural curse. This time around, the filmmakers have teased that the threat is now everywhere, hinting at a much broader scope than the intimate nightmare of the first film.
Speaking previously about the sequel, Maika Monroe described the project as darker than its predecessor.
“It’s very dark. We’re pushing the boundaries on this one for sure.”
She also suggested audiences shouldn’t expect a straightforward repeat of the original.
“It’s very different from the original. The original is a little more heightened and dramatic, and this is really quite grounded and follows the story of these two women that are mentally dealing with a lot. I thought it was really an interesting take on it.”
That suggests They Follow may place just as much emphasis on its characters as its supernatural horrors, much like the original did over a decade ago.
Disasterpeace Returns
Another piece of welcome news for fans is the return of composer Disasterpeace, whose haunting synthesiser score became almost as iconic as the film itself.
David Robert Mitchell recently confirmed the composer would once again provide the music for They Follow, ensuring the sequel retains one of the original’s most memorable elements.
Produced by NEON and Good Fear Content, They Follow is expected to begin production this summer. With David Robert Mitchell back behind the camera, Maika Monroe returning, Disasterpeace composing the score, and an increasingly impressive ensemble cast led by Jackie Earle Haley and Michael Gandolfini, the long-awaited sequel is shaping up to be one of horror’s biggest releases in the coming years.
