Scary Movie 6 Trailer Released Online as the Iconic Horror Parody Franchise Returns
The first trailer for Scary Movie 6 has officially been released online after initially debuting in theatres alongside Scream 7 (in the USA), marking the long-awaited return of one of the most recognisable horror parody franchises of the last 25 years. Officially titled Scary Movie, but widely referred to as Scary Movie 6, the film is set to arrive in theaters on June 12 via Paramount and is already taking aim at the modern era of horror with its signature no-holds-barred satire.

The trailer confirms the return of core franchise stars Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall, reuniting the central group that helped define the original films’ chaotic energy. They are joined by returning favourites including Dave Sheridan, Lochlyn Munro, Cheri Oteri, Chris Elliott, and Jon Abrahams, alongside a large ensemble cast featuring Damon Wayans Jr., Gregg Wayans, Kim Wayans, Heidi Gardner, Sydney Park, and Felissa Rose. Directed by Michael Tiddes and written by Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Keenen Ivory Wayans, Craig Wayans, and Rick Alvarez, the project marks a significant creative reunion for the Wayans family, whose involvement was key to the franchise’s early success.
Judging by the footage, Scary Movie 6 is firmly focused on parodying the current horror landscape, including recent titles and trends such as legacy sequels, elevated horror, reboots, and requels. The trailer showcases spoofs of films and series including Scream VI, M3GAN, Smile, Get Out, Longlegs, and modern horror television, while also packing in visual nods to classic genre icons like Friday the 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Saw, Child’s Play, and Hellraiser. As with previous entries, the humour relies on exaggerated recreations of recognisable scenes, genre clichés, and rapid-fire pop culture references rather than subtle satire.

The franchise itself began in 2000 with the release of Scary Movie, a box office hit that directly parodied late 1990s slashers such as Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans and written by the Wayans brothers, the original film became a defining comedy of the era thanks to its sharp genre awareness, outrageous humour, and memorable performances from Anna Faris and Regina Hall. Its success led to Scary Movie 2 in 2001, which shifted focus toward supernatural horror parodies, before the series continued with Scary Movie 3 (2003) and Scary Movie 4 (2006), both of which broadened the satire to include major genre and sci-fi hits of the time.
By the time Scary Movie 5 was released in 2013, the franchise had moved away from its original cast and core creative voices, resulting in a noticeably different tone and a less enthusiastic reception. That history makes Scary Movie 6 particularly notable, as it effectively serves as both a continuation and a creative reset, reuniting legacy cast members while updating the parody targets for a new generation of horror fans.
With the horror genre now dominated by legacy sequels, prestige horror, and constantly rebooted franchises, Scary Movie 6 appears poised to mine a rich vein of material. The trailer leans heavily into meta humour about modern fandom, cinematic universes, and the never-ending cycle of “final chapters” that are rarely final, suggesting the film will attempt to recapture the fast-paced, genre-savvy comedy that made the early entries such major hits. If the marketing is any indication, the sixth instalment is aiming to remind audiences that no horror trend, no matter how serious or critically acclaimed, is safe once the parody machine is switched back on.
