Capcom Unveils Resident Evil Veronica Remake
For years, Resident Evil fans have been asking the same question: when is Code Veronica getting the remake treatment?
Now they finally have their answer.
During Summer Game Fest 2026, Capcom officially unveiled Resident Evil Veronica, a modern reimagining of the beloved Resident Evil: Code Veronica. The announcement immediately became one of the biggest talking points of the event, with long-time fans celebrating the return of one of the most important stories in the franchise.

The reveal trailer begins deceptively quietly, showing an unnamed young woman being guided around a Paris apartment. Veteran Resident Evil players likely spotted the clues straight away, however, and the footage eventually confirms what many had already guessed. The woman is Claire Redfield, returning for a completely reimagined version of her classic adventure.
While the announcement generated huge excitement, it was hardly unexpected. Rumours of a Code Veronica remake have circulated for several years, with multiple reports suggesting the project was in development following the success of Capcom’s acclaimed remakes of Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4. Previous reports pointed towards a 2027 release window, while industry insiders had repeatedly claimed the game would be revealed sometime this year.
Originally released for the Sega Dreamcast in 2000, Resident Evil: Code Veronica occupies a unique place in franchise history. Although it was never given a numbered title, many fans have long considered it to be every bit as important as the mainline entries. In fact, the game serves as a direct continuation of Claire Redfield’s story following the destruction of Raccoon City and significantly expands the wider Resident Evil mythology.

The story follows Claire as she searches for her missing brother Chris. Her investigation leads her to Rockfort Island, a remote prison facility controlled by the mysterious Umbrella Corporation. What begins as a rescue mission soon spirals into another nightmare filled with bio-organic weapons, family madness and some of the series’ most memorable villains. The adventure later shifts to an isolated Antarctic facility, giving the game some of the franchise’s most distinctive locations.
Perhaps most importantly, Code Veronica marked the return of Albert Wesker. After seemingly meeting his end during the events of the original Resident Evil, Wesker’s shocking comeback would go on to shape much of the franchise’s future narrative. His appearance helped establish him as one of gaming’s most iconic villains, and fans will undoubtedly be eager to see how Capcom reimagines the character for modern audiences.
The original game also arrived during an important period for the series. Resident Evil had already become a global phenomenon thanks to the first three entries on the PlayStation, but Code Veronica represented a significant leap forward. Built for more powerful hardware, it abandoned the pre-rendered backgrounds of earlier games in favour of fully realised 3D environments. At the time, it felt like a glimpse into the future of survival horror.

Despite its popularity, Code Veronica has often felt overlooked when compared to other entries. While Resident Evil 2, 3 and 4 all received successful remakes, Claire’s Dreamcast adventure remained stuck on older hardware, leaving fans wondering if Capcom would ever revisit it. The announcement of Resident Evil Veronica finally changes that.
The reveal also continues Capcom’s remarkable run with the franchise. Following the success of Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village and the recent remake series, Resident Evil remains one of the strongest and most consistent horror properties in gaming. The upcoming Resident Evil: Requiem is already generating excitement, and now fans have another major title to look forward to.
Few Resident Evil games have been requested as frequently as Code Veronica. More than twenty five years after its original release, one of the series’ most beloved adventures is finally stepping back into the spotlight.
And judging by the reaction from Summer Game Fest viewers, the wait may have been worth it.
