Masters of the Universe Trailer Drops, and Fans Are Already Questioning Eternia
The teaser trailer for Masters of the Universe has finally arrived, inviting audiences to “discover their true power” and offering the first proper look at Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel’s long-gestating live-action revival of the iconic franchise. Directed by Travis Knight, the film is set to hit cinemas and premium formats on June 5, and on a purely technical level, it looks slick, expensive, and confidently assembled.
Whether it actually feels like Masters of the Universe is a different conversation entirely.

Masters of the Universe Trailer Introduces a Stacked Cast
Front and centre is Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam and his sword-wielding alter ego He-Man, backed by an undeniably impressive ensemble. Camila Mendes steps into the role of Teela, Idris Elba plays Duncan aka Man-At-Arms, and Jared Leto looms as Skeletor. They are joined by Alison Brie, Morena Baccarin, James Purefoy, Kristen Wiig, Charlotte Riley, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, making this one of the most star-heavy casts the franchise has ever seen.
Narratively, the film sticks close to familiar ground. After being separated from Eternia for fifteen years, the Sword of Power draws Adam back to his homeworld, only for him to discover it has fallen under Skeletor’s tyrannical rule. To save his people and reclaim his destiny, Adam must reunite with his allies and become He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. On paper, it is classic Masters of the Universe mythology.
Why Eternia Already Feels at Risk
For longtime fans, however, the trailer raises a few immediate red flags. Chief among them is the setting. While Eternia clearly exists and classic characters are present, the teaser strongly implies that a significant portion of the story unfolds on Earth. That alone is enough to trigger uncomfortable memories of the 1987 adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren, which notoriously sidelined Eternia in favour of generic American streets and alleyways.
In the late eighties, budget constraints were often cited as the reason. In 2026, with modern visual effects and blockbuster resources, that excuse carries far less weight.
The second concern is tonal. The humour showcased in the trailer leans heavily toward glossy, self-aware banter that feels closer to Guardians of the Galaxy than the strange, mythic, occasionally unhinged fantasy of the original cartoon and toy line. There are quips, winks, and a very modern blockbuster sheen that may make the film more accessible to general audiences, but risks flattening the bizarre identity that made Masters of the Universe stand out in the first place.

A Familiar Pattern Fans Have Seen Before
To be fair, trailers can be misleading. Entire subplots are often hidden, tones are frequently misrepresented, and Eternia may well play a far larger role than this initial teaser suggests. It is always wise not to pass final judgement based on two minutes of carefully curated footage.
That said, context matters. Masters of the Universe is not just another nostalgia IP. It is built on surreal lore, operatic villains, pulp fantasy excess, and a visual identity that was never meant to feel grounded or restrained. The more the film leans into Earth-bound storytelling and corporate-friendly humour, the more it risks repeating mistakes fans have already endured once.
Behind the scenes, the screenplay has passed through several creative hands, including Chris Butler, Aaron and Adam Nee, and David Callaham. Production is handled by Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Robbie Brenner, Steve Tisch, and DeVon Franklin, with Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz serving as an executive producer.

Can This Film Finally Do Eternia Justice?
Since launching as a Mattel toy line in 1982 and exploding into pop culture through the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe animated series, the franchise has thrived on its willingness to be weird, bold, and unapologetically fantastical. This new film clearly has the budget, cast, and visual firepower to finally do Eternia justice on the big screen.
The real question is whether it will embrace what makes Masters of the Universe unique, or sand down its sharper edges into something safer and more familiar for modern blockbuster tastes.
One thing is certain. Fans are watching closely. And Eternia has already been left behind once before.
