The Horror World Mourns The Passing of Daveigh Chase
The horror community is mourning the loss of actress Daveigh Chase, who has sadly passed away at the age of 35.
According to reports, Chase died on Tuesday following complications related to meningitis and a blood infection that led to septic issues. The news has shocked fans around the world, many of whom grew up watching her performances across horror, animation and television throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.
For horror fans, Daveigh Chase will forever be remembered as Samara Morgan in Gore Verbinski’s The Ring. Released in 2002, the film was an American remake of Hideo Nakata’s Japanese horror classic Ringu and became one of the defining horror films of its era. While Naomi Watts carried the film as journalist Rachel Keller, it was Chase’s haunting portrayal of Samara that left a lasting impression on audiences.

With her pale appearance, unnerving stare and terrifying movements, Samara quickly became one of the most recognisable horror villains of the 21st century. The now-iconic image of the ghostly child emerging from a television screen became ingrained in popular culture and helped introduce a new generation of Western audiences to J-Horror. More than twenty years later, The Ring remains one of the most effective supernatural horror films ever made, and Chase’s performance remains a huge part of why it still works so well today.
While Samara cemented her place in horror history, Chase’s career extended far beyond the genre. In the very same year that The Ring terrified cinema audiences, she voiced Lilo Pelekai in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. The animated classic became a worldwide success and remains one of Disney’s most beloved modern films. Chase brought warmth, humour and vulnerability to the character, helping create one of animation’s most memorable child protagonists. She would continue voicing Lilo in several spin-offs and television projects that followed.
Animation fans will also remember Chase for another hugely important role. She provided the English-language voice of Chihiro Ogino in Studio Ghibli’s Academy Award-winning masterpiece Spirited Away. Widely regarded as one of the greatest animated films ever made, Hayao Miyazaki’s fantasy adventure introduced countless viewers to Japanese animation and remains a landmark achievement in world cinema. Chase’s performance helped bring Chihiro’s emotional journey to English-speaking audiences and contributed to the film’s enduring popularity outside Japan.

Genre fans also know Chase from Richard Kelly’s cult classic Donnie Darko. Released in 2001, the film has only grown in stature over the years, becoming one of the most discussed and analysed cult movies of its generation. Chase played Samantha Darko, Donnie’s younger sister, later reprising the role in the 2009 follow-up S. Darko.
Throughout her career, Chase amassed an impressive list of television credits. She appeared in popular series including ER, Touched by an Angel, Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, CSI and Cold Case. She also enjoyed a significant recurring role in HBO’s acclaimed drama Big Love, appearing in 32 episodes of the series.
Her filmography included a wide variety of projects, ranging from family films such as Beethoven’s 5th to thrillers and dramas including Silence, American Romance, Jack Goes Home, Yellow and Killer Crush. Whether appearing on screen or behind a microphone, Chase consistently demonstrated a talent for creating memorable characters that resonated with audiences.
Although her career encompassed many genres and mediums, it is perhaps fitting that so many horror fans are remembering her today. Samara Morgan remains one of the most frightening figures in modern horror cinema, a character whose image still has the power to unsettle audiences decades after her first appearance. It takes a special performance to create a horror icon, and Daveigh Chase achieved that while still a teenager.

Few actors leave behind such a diverse legacy at such a young age. From one of horror’s most unforgettable villains to beloved animated characters who touched the lives of millions, Chase’s work continues to entertain, frighten and inspire audiences around the world.
Our thoughts are with Daveigh Chase’s family, friends and fans during this difficult time.
