Don Mancini Set to Write and Direct New Chucky Movie
Everyone’s favourite foul-mouthed Good Guy doll is sharpening his knife once again, as a brand new Chucky movie is officially in the works. Even better, the man who has guided the franchise from day one, Don Mancini, will not only be writing the next instalment, but also directing it. The news comes via Bloody Disgusting, who broke the update.
This is exactly why the Child’s Play series has lasted nearly four decades while other horror icons have been rebooted, retconned, rebooted again, and then rebooted for good measure. Mancini created Chucky back in 1988 and, unlike most long-running horror franchises, he has remained creatively involved every step of the way. That continuity has allowed the series to evolve in ways that feel deliberate rather than desperate.

The original Child’s Play introduced audiences to Charles Lee Ray, a serial killer who transfers his soul into a Good Guy doll using voodoo. What started as a straight-up horror film gradually shifted tone over the years. Child’s Play 2 and Child’s Play 3 leaned into the slasher formula, while Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky embraced a much darker, self-aware sense of humour. That tonal flexibility is part of what has kept the franchise alive while others faded away.
In more recent years, Mancini steered things back toward horror with Curse of Chucky (2013) and Cult of Chucky (2017), both of which were released direct-to-video but were praised by fans for returning the character to something genuinely sinister. That darker approach continued into the “Chucky” television series, which ran for three seasons across USA and SYFY, maintaining continuity with the films and bringing legacy characters back into the fold alongside a new generation of very unlucky victims.

One of the most impressive aspects of the Child’s Play franchise is how it has managed to keep its core mythology intact while still evolving with the times. Characters like Andy Barclay and Tiffany Valentine have been allowed to grow across multiple decades, something rarely seen in horror, giving the series a strange but effective sense of long-term storytelling that rewards loyal viewers.
Now, Mancini is looking to push things further. According to the report, the new film will remain within the established continuity, connecting the events of the original films and the television series rather than starting from scratch. That alone is rare in horror, where timelines tend to be treated more like suggestions than rules.
Perhaps most interestingly, Mancini’s goal is to make Chucky “scary again.” That means a return to the tone of the original Child’s Play films and the more grounded dread seen in Curse of Chucky. In other words, fewer wisecracks for the sake of it and more of that unsettling feeling that comes from being hunted by something that should absolutely not be able to move on its own.
Chucky Returning To Cinemas
The film is also being planned for a theatrical release, which would mark Chucky’s return to cinemas for the first time in over twenty years. The last big screen outing in the original continuity was Seed of Chucky in 2004, with subsequent entries finding their audience through home release and television instead.

As it stands, there are eight films connected to Mancini’s storyline, alongside the 2019 remake that exists in its own separate universe. This upcoming entry will become the ninth film overall and the next chapter in one of horror’s most consistent long-running sagas.
No casting or plot details have been revealed just yet, but one thing is certain. If Don Mancini is in charge, Chucky is not being reinvented, reimagined, or “grittily rebooted.” He is simply coming back to do what he has always done best… ruin people’s lives while being about two feet tall.
