Mads Mikkelsen and Jared Harris Join Scorsese’s Horror Mystery What Happens at Night
Martin Scorsese’s upcoming horror mystery What Happens at Night continues to build an impressive ensemble, with Mads Mikkelsen and Jared Harris now officially joining the cast. The film already features Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in leading roles, alongside Patricia Clarkson, marking one of the director’s most intriguing genre projects in recent years.
According to Deadline, the film is being directed by Scorsese from a screenplay by Patrick Marber, based on Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name. While Scorsese is most commonly associated with crime dramas and character-driven epics, this project leans more heavily into psychological horror and mystery territory, with early comparisons being drawn to The Shining and the surreal tone of “Twin Peaks.”

The story follows a married American couple who travel to a remote, snow-covered European town in order to adopt a baby. Upon arrival, they check into a vast, largely deserted hotel where they encounter a strange and unsettling collection of residents, including a flamboyant chanteuse, a morally dubious businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. As their stay progresses, the couple begin to realise that nothing in the town is quite what it seems, and their understanding of both their surroundings and their own relationship slowly starts to unravel.
The premise itself aligns closely with the tone of Cameron’s original novel, which blends psychological unease with dreamlike storytelling, using isolation and ambiguity as key narrative devices. Rather than relying on overt horror tropes, the story builds tension through atmosphere, identity, and the disorienting experience of being trapped in a place that feels both real and unreal at the same time.

The addition of Mads Mikkelsen and Jared Harris significantly strengthens the film’s dramatic credentials. Mikkelsen, known for his work in “Hannibal” and Casino Royale, has long demonstrated a unique ability to balance menace and emotional complexity, making him a natural fit for a surreal psychological narrative. Harris, whose performances in “Chernobyl” and “Foundation” have been widely praised, brings a similarly authoritative presence that often lends gravitas to enigmatic and morally layered characters.
Their casting alongside DiCaprio and Lawrence suggests that What Happens at Night will be a performance-driven piece rather than a conventional horror spectacle. Patricia Clarkson’s involvement further reinforces this, given her extensive experience in psychologically intense and character-focused projects, including her previous collaboration with Scorsese in Shutter Island.

The film also marks another reunion between Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, continuing one of modern cinema’s most consistent director-actor partnerships. What Happens at Night will be their seventh feature collaboration, following Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Killers of the Flower Moon. Their previous work together has often explored themes of obsession, identity, and psychological deterioration, all of which appear thematically compatible with this new project’s eerie, introspective narrative.
Behind the scenes, the film is being backed by Apple Studios and Studiocanal, with Scorsese producing through his Sikelia Productions banner. This partnership indicates a prestige-focused production approach, aligning with the literary source material and the high-calibre cast assembled for the film.
What makes What Happens at Night particularly noteworthy is how it positions Scorsese within the horror-adjacent space without abandoning his trademark storytelling sensibilities. The combination of a snowbound setting, a near-empty hotel, and a cast of mysterious figures strongly suggests a slow-burning, atmospheric experience rather than a traditional genre piece filled with overt scares. Instead, the horror appears rooted in psychological disorientation, shifting realities, and the unsettling erosion of personal identity.

With its literary origins, acclaimed cast, and a director rarely associated with outright horror, What Happens at Night is shaping up to be a fascinating addition to the genre landscape. The involvement of performers such as Mikkelsen and Harris only deepens the intrigue, hinting at a layered ensemble drama set within a surreal and frozen world where perception, memory, and truth may be far less stable than they first appear.
