Magic Remake In Development With Sam Raimi Producing
A new take on the psychological horror masterpiece Magic is officially in development at Lionsgate. The upcoming remake is being produced by legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi, creator of the The Evil Dead series, and prolific horror producer Roy Lee, known for modern hits like Barbarian and Weapons.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the script is being written by seasoned horror screenwriters Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, best known for Freddy vs. Jason and the 2009 Friday the 13th reboot. No casting details have been confirmed yet, but early reports describe the project as a reimagining of the chilling 1978 original.

Looking Back at the 1978 Magic
The original Magic, directed by Richard Attenborough, premiered in November 1978 and became an instant cult favourite. It starred a young Anthony Hopkins as Corky, a failed magician who reinvents himself as a ventriloquist. Corky’s act quickly becomes popular, thanks to his abrasive and unsettling dummy Fats.
However, when Corky is offered a major television deal, he panics about failing the required mental health evaluation and flees back to his hometown. There, he rekindles a romance with Peggy, played by Ann-Margret, while struggling to keep control of his deteriorating mind. Fats seems to develop a will of his own, creating a terrifying psychological spiral.
The supporting cast featured Burgess Meredith, Ed Lauter, and David Ogden Stiers. Made for seven million dollars, the film earned more than twenty three million worldwide and became known for its intense atmosphere and Hopkins’ haunting dual performance. The image of Fats became one of horror cinema’s most recognisable icons.

Raimi’s Involvement Sparks Excitement
Sam Raimi’s name alone has horror fans intrigued. He launched his career with low budget genre classics before moving on to massive blockbusters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. His trademark blend of dark humour and unsettling tension makes him an ideal fit to breathe new life into Magic.
Co producer Roy Lee also has a rich horror pedigree, having produced films like It, The Ring, and The Grudge. Together, the two could deliver a remake that respects the original’s psychological intensity while adding a modern twist.
A Modern Vision for a Classic Tale

The new film aims to explore the same themes of fractured identity, obsession, and psychological collapse that made the original so powerful. With Raimi and Lee behind the scenes and Swift and Shannon handling the screenplay, there is strong potential for this version of Magic to captivate a new generation of horror fans.
No release date has been confirmed yet, but anticipation is already building as this cult classic prepares to cast its eerie spell once again.
