Devon Sawa Joins Return of the Living Dead Reboot – New Teaser Unveiled at LA Comic Con
Nearly forty years ago, Dan O’Bannon’s The Return of the Living Dead exploded onto screens, fusing punk rock energy with gory mayhem and redefining the zombie subgenre. Over time, the series grew into a strange but beloved franchise, from the slapstick tone of Part II to the tragic zombie romance of Part III, before eventually drifting into obscurity with Necropolis and Rave to the Grave. Now, two decades later, the dead refuse to stay buried, as dueling projects vie to bring the series back to life.
While DRagonSTUDIOS pushes forward with Trash’s Revenge, the rival project from Living Dead Media just resurfaced in a big way. After months of silence, a brand-new teaser for Steve Wolsh’s reboot of Return of the Living Dead was unveiled at LA Comic Con — confirming that horror favorite Devon Sawa (Idle Hands, Final Destination, Chucky) has officially joined the cast.
Devon Sawa Talks Tarman, Santa Hats, and Practical Gore

Speaking at the convention, Sawa revealed he filmed his scenes over the summer — including a memorable encounter with the legendary zombie Tarman. Amusingly, his role had him wearing a Santa hat, hinting at the reboot’s unusual Christmas setting. Special effects legend Tony Gardner, who created the unforgettable “half-corpse” in the 1985 original, was the one who brought Sawa on board.
Gardner isn’t just returning as a consultant; he’s once again handling the practical FX, ensuring the film delivers the gooey, grotesque thrills that fans expect. In fact, the filmmakers have promised there will be no CGI, keeping the reboot faithful to the franchise’s gritty, tactile roots.

Christmas 1985: Zombies, Snowstorms, and Trioxin
According to the official synopsis, the new Return of the Living Dead is set 18 months after the UNEEDA Warehouse disaster in Louisville. When another leak of Trioxin 2-4-5 unleashes chaos, a small Pennsylvania town finds itself in the grip of a zombie outbreak during Christmas 1985. As if the undead weren’t terrifying enough, survivors must also contend with brutal blizzard conditions — with the Army once again on their trail.
This clever twist situates the story as a direct continuation of O’Bannon’s original, making the project feel less like a reboot and more like a long-lost sequel. And yes, this time around, it’s Tarman who’s coming to town.

Behind the Camera and Production Update
The film is being produced by WithAnO Productions and directed by Steve Wolsh (Muck, Kill Her Goats), who also serves as CEO of Living Dead Media. Alongside Gardner’s effects, another franchise veteran, storyboard artist Pete Von Sholly (Return of the Living Dead II and III), contributed to the new teaser trailer.
Originally aiming for a Christmas 2025 release, insiders now suggest the date has shifted to November 2026. While fans may have to wait a little longer, the involvement of Sawa and Gardner, coupled with the practical FX approach, has already generated significant buzz.
With rival projects and legal skirmishes in the background, the Return of the Living Dead franchise has found itself back in the spotlight. Whether this new chapter can live up to O’Bannon’s anarchic masterpiece remains to be seen — but for the first time in years, it feels like the dead are truly returning.
