Mama (2013) – The Mother That Won’t Let Go

Directed by Andrés Muschietti and based on his 2008 short film of the same name, Mama is a gothic fairy tale disguised as a supernatural horror. It begins with a desperate act — a man murders his wife and flees with his two young daughters, only to crash his car deep in the woods. He takes shelter in an abandoned cabin and prepares to kill them… but something in the darkness intervenes.
Five years later, the girls — Victoria and Lilly — are discovered feral and half-wild, but alive. They’re placed in the custody of their uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his partner Annabel (Jessica Chastain). But they don’t return alone. They’ve brought “Mama” with them.
Mama is not a metaphor. She is real.
Her ghost haunts their new home with eerie lullabies, shifting shadows, and chilling physicality. As the children bond with Annabel, Mama becomes jealous — her appearances grow violent and frequent. Through research and flashbacks, we learn Mama is Edith Brennan, a 19th-century mental patient who fled an asylum after killing a nun and leapt off a cliff with her infant. She died, but the baby’s body was lost — and so, Mama’s soul could not rest.
Instead, she latched onto Victoria and Lilly as surrogates, feeding off their dependence, protecting them from harm, and growing stronger in the shadows.
The final act moves back to the woods, where Mama attempts to reclaim the girls fully — wanting to leap once again from the cliff, this time with her “new children.” Victoria resists, having found a new life. Lilly, younger and more loyal, chooses to go with Mama. Together, ghost and child vanish into the mist, leaving Victoria behind with a broken heart and a new chance at life.
Physiology & Behavior

Mama is not bound by the rules of classic ghosts. Her form is unnatural and fluid, moving with erratic, insect-like twitches and floating as if underwater. Her presence is felt through cold drafts, black mold, and nursery rhymes sung in reverse.
Key traits include:
- Teleportation and levitation
- Elongated limbs, snapping joints, and elastic movement
- Violent telekinetic outbursts when threatened
- Extreme maternal instinct — both protective and possessive
- Attached to children emotionally and spiritually
- Her strength grows with emotional proximity to the girls
- Can appear physical or ethereal, depending on her mood and power
Javier Botet’s performance — enhanced with minimal CGI — gives her an uncanny, nightmare quality. She is both horrifying and tragic — a mother whose love curdled into obsession.
Cultural Impact
- Mama was a surprise box office hit, earning over $146 million on a $15 million budget
- Cemented Andrés Muschietti’s style, leading directly to his directing IT (2017) and The Flash (2023)
- Javier Botet became a staple of supernatural horror (also portraying the Crooked Man, Slender Man, and multiple demons)
- Produced by Guillermo del Toro, whose influence is felt in the creature design and emotional storytelling
- Spawned international fan art, discussions about motherhood in horror, and ongoing demand for a sequel (which was announced but remains unproduced)
- Notable for blending fairy tale melancholy with poltergeist horror, evoking comparisons to The Babadook and The Orphanage
- Frequently cited in lists of modern ghost icons
League Placement
Mama belongs in the Second Class Tier — a powerful, spectral force whose horror lies not only in her shape but in her sorrow. She doesn’t kill for pleasure. She haunts for love. And that may be the most dangerous thing of all.
