Who Is Rawhead Rex?
Rawhead Rex is a savage, ancient pagan god — a towering humanoid beast with demonic features, fiery red eyes, and a mouth full of jagged fangs. Revered in the darkest chapters of folklore, he was once worshipped through blood sacrifice, until finally being entombed beneath the Irish countryside.
But when man forgets his fear of old gods… monsters rise again.
Freed from his underground prison after centuries of slumber, Rawhead returns with one purpose: feed, destroy, and reclaim dominion over the land that buried him. Unlike modern slashers, Rawhead doesn’t stalk or sneak — he charges headfirst, rips humans apart with bare claws, and urges others to worship him in exchange for power.
He’s the pure embodiment of pagan rage, male primal force, and anti-Christian wrath. The very sight of him causes religious men to tremble… and some to convert.
Rawhead Rex (1986)

Based on Clive Barker’s short story from Books of Blood, the film adaptation was directed by George Pavlou, with Barker penning the screenplay himself — though he later distanced himself from the final product due to changes made during production.
The story begins in rural Ireland, where a farmer accidentally removes a stone monolith — unleashing the buried beast beneath it: Rawhead Rex. Standing over seven feet tall, with glowing eyes and rotting flesh, Rawhead begins a killing spree across the countryside, leaving behind mangled bodies, screaming children, and scorched churchyards.
Highlights of his rampage include:
- Ripping a man through a trailer window, mid-meal.
- Crushing a priest’s skull with his bare hands.
- Destroying a police barricade, shrugging off gunfire.
- Baptizing a loyal servant in urine, in a scene controversially cut from most releases but famously included in Barker’s original vision (as a symbol of submission and dominance).
Rawhead’s greatest threat is not any weapon — but a stone relic linked to a fertility goddess, hidden within a church. The climax pits ancient masculinity (Rawhead) against the forgotten feminine divine — an allegory central to Barker’s original tale but mostly dulled in the film version.
Despite Barker’s own disappointment with the monster’s final suit design (he wanted something more Lovecraftian, less “rubber monster”), Rawhead Rex gained cult status over the decades, especially following its restored Blu-ray release in 2017.
