Bill Roberts is the primary antagonist of the 1989 slasher film Intruder. A longtime employee and co owner of the Walnut Lake Market grocery store, Bill is a seemingly friendly authority figure whose deep emotional attachment to the store eventually drives him to murder. Unlike many slashers motivated by revenge or trauma, Bill’s killing spree grows out of obsession with ownership and control. When he learns that the store is going to be sold and the employees laid off, he snaps and decides that the only way to stop the sale is to eliminate everyone involved.
Bill initially appears helpful and protective toward his staff, even defending cashier Jennifer Ross when her violent ex boyfriend Craig causes trouble in the store. However, this concern masks a far darker intention. After the employees are informed that the market is being sold, Bill secretly begins eliminating them one by one while attempting to frame Craig as the killer.
Intruder (1989)

Set entirely inside the Walnut Lake Market after closing hours, Intruder follows the night crew as they prepare the store for its final sale. As tensions rise between the workers and Jennifer’s ex boyfriend Craig, Bill quietly begins carrying out his plan. His first victim is cashier Linda, whom he ambushes outside the store and stabs to death.
Bill then confronts his business partner Danny, who holds the majority share of the store and insisted on selling. He murders Danny in his office by forcing his eye onto a receipt spindle. With the sale now impossible to reverse, Bill’s plan spirals further into violence as he continues killing the remaining employees, including Joe, Tim, Bub, Randy and Dave. The murders are particularly gruesome, with bodies mutilated and dismembered throughout the store’s aisles, stockrooms and meat lockers.
Throughout the night Bill manipulates the situation to make it appear as though Craig is responsible, even knocking Craig unconscious during a fight and using his presence as a convenient scapegoat. Eventually Jennifer discovers the truth when she notices blood on Bill’s hands while he pretends to call the police.
The final act becomes a relentless chase through the locked supermarket as Bill stalks Jennifer through aisles, storage rooms and display cabinets. His behaviour grows increasingly unhinged, even using Danny’s severed head as a grotesque puppet while taunting her. Jennifer ultimately escapes outside the building, but Bill continues pursuing her until Craig returns and attacks him with a meat cleaver.
When the police arrive, Bill falsely accuses Jennifer and Craig of committing the murders. As they are arrested despite their protests, Bill appears to die from his wounds. However, the film ends on a chilling note when Bill suddenly opens his eyes, leaving his ultimate fate uncertain.

Character and Legacy
Bill Roberts represents the everyday slasher villain whose violence emerges from obsession rather than supernatural motives. His familiarity with the store environment allows him to use it as a hunting ground, turning mundane supermarket equipment into tools of murder. The film’s confined setting amplifies his menace, transforming an ordinary workplace into a claustrophobic killing floor.
Intruder gained a cult following among horror fans for its inventive gore effects and unique supermarket setting. Bill Roberts remains one of the more underrated slasher killers of the late nineteen eighties, particularly remembered for the film’s brutal kills and the unsettling final moment suggesting he may still be alive.
The film’s reputation has also been strengthened through boutique home media releases. In the United Kingdom, Intruder was released on Blu-ray by 88 Films as part of their Slasher Classics Collection, a series dedicated to restoring and preserving cult slasher titles. The release featured a restored and uncut presentation of the film along with bonus material, helping introduce the Walnut Lake Market massacre and Bill Roberts to a new generation of horror collectors.

League Placement
Bill Roberts belongs in the Third Class Tier. He is a grounded human killer with a memorable setting and brutal murder spree, but his legacy remains tied primarily to a single cult slasher film rather than a larger franchise or mythic presence.
