Using personal belongings, strands of hair, her own blood and a strange thorn-covered tree, she exerts supernatural control over both children and adults alike. Under her influence, victims lose their free will and become little more than extensions of her own sinister purpose.
The missing children are ultimately discovered hidden beneath Alex’s home in a catatonic state, having been gathered there through Gladys’ rituals. Although much of Gladys’ past is deliberately left unexplained, the film strongly suggests she has practised her occult rituals for many years.
