Stranger Things: Other Worlds Announced as New Live-Action Netflix Series
The gates to the Upside Down might have closed on the original Stranger Things series, but Netflix clearly isn’t finished exploring the strange and frequently unpleasant things lurking beyond Hawkins. A brand new live-action spin-off, titled Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure, has officially been announced, taking the franchise back to the 1950s with an entirely new setting and cast of characters.
The series is scheduled to arrive on Netflix in 2028, with acclaimed filmmaker Joe Wright directing its first three episodes. Rather than continuing the adventures of Eleven, Mike, Dustin and the rest of the Hawkins gang, the new production will explore an earlier chapter of the franchise’s mythology, long before the events that introduced audiences to the Upside Down in 2016.
Netflix revealed the project on Stranger Things Day, the annual celebration held on 6 November, the date Will Byers disappeared in the original series. An announcement trailer has also been released, although the streaming service is keeping most of the story’s secrets firmly under wraps.
Stranger Things: Other Worlds Takes the Horror Back to 1955
Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure will take place in Marion, Nevada, during April 1955, shifting the action away from Hawkins, Indiana, and into a completely different corner of America. The setting makes it a prequel not only to the original television series but also to Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the stage production that explored events surrounding a young Henry Creel in 1959.
That earlier period could offer some interesting possibilities for the franchise. The original series made its name through a combination of 1980s nostalgia, science-fiction mysteries, government conspiracies and supernatural horror, drawing inspiration from filmmakers and writers including Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter and Stephen King.
Moving the story into the 1950s gives its creators an opportunity to explore a different cultural landscape, one associated with Cold War paranoia, atomic-age science fiction and America’s fascination with flying saucers. Whether any of those elements will actually feature in the new series remains unconfirmed, but the period certainly provides fertile ground for the kind of mystery and unease that made Stranger Things successful.
What Netflix has confirmed is that the series will introduce new heroes, villains and mythology. The Duffer Brothers have suggested that the project will feel recognisably connected to Stranger Things while offering audiences something substantially different, although they are refusing to reveal precisely what that means.
Joe Wright and Kate Trefry Lead the New Stranger Things Series
The involvement of Joe Wright is one of the more intriguing aspects of the announcement. The British director is best known for films including Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, Hanna and Darkest Hour, the latter earning Gary Oldman an Academy Award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill.
Wright has also explored darker material through projects such as The Woman in the Window, making his involvement in a supernatural mystery series an interesting addition to an already varied career. He will direct the first three episodes of Other Worlds, with production planned to take place in New Mexico.
Kate Trefry will serve as showrunner, writer and executive producer alongside Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer. Trefry has worked on the original series since its second season and also wrote the story for Stranger Things: The First Shadow, giving her considerable experience with the franchise’s characters and mythology.
The Duffer Brothers explained that Other Worlds is a project they have wanted to develop for several years. They praised Trefry’s long-standing involvement with the series and Wright’s filmmaking, while teasing that the new production will feature an unfamiliar location and an entirely new collection of characters.

Trefry has described the spin-off as an opportunity to return to the horror, mystery and emotional storytelling of the original while exploring a completely new narrative. Shawn Levy, who executive produced the flagship series, is also involved through 21 Laps Entertainment, which will produce the new show.
Casting details have not yet been announced, and Netflix has not revealed an episode count or a more specific premiere date beyond 2028.
Stranger Things Expands Beyond Hawkins
The announcement represents another significant step in Netflix’s plans to continue the Stranger Things franchise beyond its original five-season run. The supernatural drama became one of the streaming service’s defining productions, transforming its young cast into international stars and introducing audiences to monsters including the Demogorgon, the Mind Flayer and Vecna.
Its success has already led to Stranger Things: The First Shadow, which premiered in London’s West End in 2023 before transferring to Broadway, and the animated series Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, which explores another adventure within the established universe.
Other Worlds, however, offers something different by moving away from both Hawkins and the familiar group of characters. Rather than depending entirely on nostalgia for the original cast, it gives Netflix the chance to establish new mysteries that could potentially support further stories.

Whether audiences will embrace a Stranger Things series without its most recognisable characters remains to be seen, but the involvement of the Duffers, Trefry and Wright provides an experienced creative team. The biggest challenge will be ensuring that the new monsters and mysteries feel genuinely frightening rather than simply repeating what worked the first time.
For now, the details remain deliberately mysterious, and Netflix appears quite happy to keep fans guessing. Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is heading to the streaming service in 2028, and somewhere in Nevada in 1955, something very strange is apparently waiting to be discovered.
