Alien: Romulus 2 Not Shelved, Says 20th Century Studios President
Reports claiming Alien: Romulus 2 has been shelved have been firmly denied by 20th Century Studios, putting an end to the latest rumour surrounding the future of the hit sci-fi horror franchise.
Following the critical and commercial success of Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus in 2024, a sequel was quickly confirmed to be in development. The film successfully bridged the gap between Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens, introducing audiences to Rain Carradine (Cailee Spaeny) and the synthetic Andy (David Jonsson), while delivering a return to the claustrophobic, practical-effects-driven horror that made the original series so iconic.
In recent days, however, speculation began spreading online that the sequel had quietly been cancelled.
That rumour didn’t last long.
When a now-deleted post on X claimed that Alien: Romulus 2 had officially been shelved, Steve Asbell, President of Production at 20th Century Studios, responded with a simple but decisive reply:
“Nope.”
Although only one word, it’s the clearest public statement the studio has made about the sequel’s status in months and confirms that reports of the project’s demise are inaccurate.
What Asbell’s response doesn’t reveal is exactly where the film currently stands. There’s still no official word on who will direct the sequel or when production might begin, but fans can at least rest easy knowing the project remains alive.
The uncertainty surrounding the sequel largely stems from comments made by Fede Álvarez, who has confirmed he will not return to direct the next instalment. Instead, Álvarez has said he intends to remain creatively involved as both a producer and co-writer while another filmmaker takes over directing duties. Since then, online speculation has suggested there may have been creative disagreements behind the scenes, though neither Álvarez nor 20th Century Studios has publicly confirmed any such reports.
Meanwhile, the Alien franchise itself shows no signs of slowing down.
Separate reports indicate that Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You, Whalefall) is developing his own standalone Alien film for 20th Century Studios. Duffield has quickly become one of genre cinema’s most exciting writers and filmmakers, while his upcoming adaptation of Whalefall has already generated significant buzz. His involvement suggests the studio is looking to expand the franchise with multiple creative voices rather than relying on a single filmmaker.
That strategy mirrors what 20th Century Studios has already done with the Predator franchise, allowing different directors to tell unique stories within the same universe.
For now, many questions remain unanswered. We still don’t know who will direct Alien: Romulus 2, when cameras might roll, or exactly where the story will take Rain and Andy next.
What we do know, however, is that one rumour can officially be put to bed. According to 20th Century Studios’ own President of Production, Alien: Romulus 2 has not been shelved.
