88 Films Brings The Mothman Prophecies to 4K UHD This October with Packed Collector’s Edition
One of the finest supernatural thrillers of the 2000s is finally getting the deluxe physical media treatment it deserves. 88 Films has announced that The Mothman Prophecies will arrive on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray in the UK on 26 October 2026, complete with a wealth of new special features and two striking artwork options for collectors.
For fans of atmospheric supernatural cinema, this is shaping up to be one of the label’s standout releases of the year.
Directed by Mark Pellington (Arlington Road), The Mothman Prophecies stars Richard Gere as journalist John Klein, whose life is shattered following the death of his wife. While travelling on assignment, he inexplicably finds himself hundreds of miles off course in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where reports of a mysterious winged creature and a series of unsettling paranormal events have left the local community living in fear. As Klein begins investigating the strange occurrences, he discovers disturbing links between the sightings, his late wife’s final drawings and an overwhelming sense that an unimaginable tragedy is fast approaching.
Inspired by the alleged real-life events documented in John Keel’s 1975 book of the same name, the film takes a restrained, psychological approach to the legendary Mothman myth. Rather than relying on jump scares or elaborate creature effects, Pellington crafts an unsettling atmosphere filled with grief, paranoia and the fear of the unknown. More than twenty years after its release, the film remains widely admired for its eerie tone, haunting imagery and one of Richard Gere’s strongest dramatic performances.
88 Films appears to have treated the title with the care it deserves. The release features a brand-new 4K remaster from the original camera negatives, presented in Dolby Vision HDR, alongside a standard 1080p Blu-ray, making it accessible whether you’ve upgraded to UHD or not. Collectors will have two editions to choose from. The 88 Films webstore exclusive, limited to just 1,000 copies, comes housed in packaging featuring the film’s original theatrical artwork, making it the version likely to appeal most to long-time fans. Meanwhile, the standard sell-through edition, which will be available through retailers including HMV and Zavvi, features brand-new artwork by Devon Whitehead. Whichever edition you choose, both promise to be handsome additions to any physical media collection.
The limited edition itself is packed with extras, including a 40-page perfect-bound book featuring new essays by Walter Chaw and James Rose, accompanied by rare stills from the film. Also included are a rigid slipcase, a double-sided fold-out poster and five collectible postcards, ensuring this is very much aimed at collectors rather than casual viewers.
The on-disc content is equally impressive. Newly produced bonus features include two brand-new audio commentaries, one featuring director Mark Pellington, cinematographer Fred Murphy, editor Brian Berdan, production designer Richard Hoover and composer Andy Milburn, while the second pairs renowned film critic Kim Newman with filmmaker Sean Hogan. There’s also an archive commentary from Pellington himself.
Among the headline extras is the brand-new feature-length documentary Do Not Be Afraid: Investigating The Mothman Prophecies, bringing together interviews with Pellington, Will Patton, Fred Murphy, Richard Hoover, Brian Berdan and composers tomandandy. Additional new material includes The Bridge – The Making of the Bridge Sequence and Mothman Under the Influence, a montage of production archive footage accompanied by music from David Ness.
Returning archive material includes Pellington’s Day by Day documentaries, the Search for the Mothman featurette, a first-look special, archive interviews with Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Will Patton and Mark Pellington, deleted scenes, trailers, the teaser and the “Halflight” music video by Low, making this the most comprehensive home video presentation the film has received to date.
While The Mothman Prophecies headlines the October slate, 88 Films has also announced several other catalogue releases. Mermaids (1990), starring Cher, Bob Hoskins, Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci, arrives on Blu-ray, while martial arts fans can also look forward to Where’s Officer Tuba? (1986) and The Owl vs Bumbo (1984), both making their way to Blu-ray as part of the label’s continuing celebration of classic Hong Kong cinema.
For many collectors, though, The Mothman Prophecies is the crown jewel. Beautifully atmospheric, quietly haunting and unlike almost any other supernatural thriller of its era, it has long deserved a premium physical media release. Judging by the extensive restoration, impressive array of new special features and the choice between original or newly commissioned artwork, 88 Films looks to have delivered exactly that.
