Kill Count: 8 confirmed victims
Tier: Third Class
Eric Matthews is one of the more unusual slasher villains of the late 1980s, combining elements of Gaston Leroux’s The Phantom of the Opera with the booming shopping mall culture of the decade. Scarred, presumed dead and living within the hidden passages of a newly built shopping centre, Eric wages a violent campaign of revenge against those responsible for destroying his life while obsessively watching over the woman he once loved.
Although Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge never achieved mainstream success, the film has since developed a cult following thanks to its memorable premise, inventive kills and unmistakably late-1980s atmosphere.

Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge (1989)

Eric Matthews appears to die after rescuing his girlfriend, Melody Austin, from a suspicious house fire. Unknown to everyone else, he survives but is left horrifically burned and disfigured.
A year later, a modern shopping mall has been constructed on the site where his home once stood. Secretly living within the building’s maintenance tunnels, ventilation shafts and hidden spaces, Eric watches shoppers from the shadows while keeping a particularly close eye on Melody, who now works at the mall.
Initially, Eric limits himself to stealing supplies, clothing and weapons to survive. However, his obsession with Melody and his hatred for those connected to the fire quickly escalate into murder.
Using the mall itself as his hunting ground, Eric dispatches victims in increasingly elaborate ways. A maintenance worker is forced into an industrial ventilation fan, a corrupt security guard is crushed into an electrical panel with a forklift, another victim is strangled after being caught in an escalator, and security chief Christopher Volker is decapitated inside an automatic cardboard crusher after revealing his role in the original arson attack.
As reporter Peter Baldwin investigates the mysterious killings, the truth about Eric’s survival slowly comes to light. Melody eventually discovers that Eric is alive, but reveals that she has moved on with her life and no longer loves him.
Unable to accept this rejection, Eric decides to destroy the entire shopping mall by planting explosives beneath the building. Before the bomb detonates, he takes revenge on those responsible for his suffering, including mall owner Harv Posner and Mayor Karen Wilton, both of whom had profited from the redevelopment of the site.
The survivors escape moments before the mall is destroyed in a massive explosion, apparently bringing Eric’s bloody revenge to an end.
Personality

Unlike many slashers driven by pure bloodlust, Eric Matthews is fuelled by heartbreak, betrayal and revenge.
Before the fire, he was an ordinary young man deeply in love with Melody. His horrific injuries and years of isolation twist that love into an unhealthy obsession. He watches Melody constantly, leaving flowers and gifts while murdering anyone he believes threatens her or stands in the way of their reunion.
Eric is also driven by a genuine desire for vengeance. Rather than killing indiscriminately, many of his victims are directly connected to the corruption, greed and violence that led to his apparent death and the construction of the shopping mall over his former home.
Despite his brutality, Eric retains flashes of humanity, making him a more tragic figure than many traditional slasher villains.
Weapons and Methods

Eric makes excellent use of the shopping mall environment, turning everyday maintenance equipment into deadly weapons.
His arsenal includes:
- A crossbow
- Rope and improvised snares
- Industrial machinery
- A poisonous snake
- Fire and explosives
- Forklifts and electrical equipment
- Crushing machinery hidden within the mall
His kills rely as much on planning and environmental hazards as physical strength, making each murder feel unique.
Character and Legacy
Released during the final years of the original slasher boom, Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge arrived at a time when audiences had already seen numerous masked killers. Rather than simply copying the formula, the film blended slasher conventions with classic Gothic influences, effectively transforming Gaston Leroux’s Phantom into a modern urban horror figure stalking America’s shopping malls.
While critics were largely dismissive upon release, the film has since found a loyal cult audience. Fans often praise its creative setting, entertaining practical effects and imaginative death scenes, while Derek Rydall’s sympathetic performance gives Eric more emotional depth than many slasher antagonists of the era.
The film has also become popular among collectors following Arrow Video’s acclaimed 2021 Blu-ray release, which included multiple cuts of the film alongside a wealth of new bonus features that helped introduce the forgotten cult favourite to a new generation of horror fans.

Why He Belongs in Third Class
Eric Matthews is an inventive and memorable slasher villain whose tragic backstory helps separate him from many of his masked contemporaries.
Although Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge never reached the popularity of genre heavyweights like Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street, Eric’s unique setting, inventive kills and sympathetic motivations have earned him lasting cult status among fans of 1980s horror.
He remains one of the more overlooked slashers of the decade and a worthy addition to the Hall of Killers.
