Sarah Michelle Gellar to Play the Grim Reaper in Horror Romance Thud
Sarah Michelle Gellar is continuing her return to the horror genre, with the iconic actress set to play the Grim Reaper in the upcoming supernatural romance Thud.
According to Deadline, Gellar will star alongside Rudy Pankow of Outer Banks fame in the film, which is being directed by Next Exit filmmaker Mali Elfman and produced by horror powerhouses Radio Silence.
The project marks another collaboration between Gellar and Radio Silence after the actress recently joined the cast of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come. While details remain limited, the premise alone is enough to make Thud one of the more intriguing genre projects currently in development.

Based on an original screenplay by Noga Pnueli, whose previous credits include Meet Cute, the film centres on an unlikely romance between two supernatural beings. According to the official synopsis, the Grim Reaper and the Devil cross paths during a three-day destination wedding where both have arrived with very different plans. Amid the chaos, the pair unexpectedly fall in love, creating a supernatural romance wrapped in dark comedy and fantasy elements.
Gellar will portray the Grim Reaper, while Pankow takes on the role of the Devil.
The casting continues what has been a welcome resurgence for Gellar within the horror world. While she became a global star thanks to her legendary role as Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, horror fans have long considered her one of the genre’s most recognisable faces. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, she became a staple of horror cinema through films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer, where she memorably played beauty queen Helen Shivers, and Scream 2, in which she appeared as sorority sister Cici Cooper in one of the sequel’s most memorable sequences.
She later took centre stage in The Grudge, the 2004 American remake of the Japanese horror classic Ju-On, which became a major box office success and introduced an entirely new generation of horror fans to the terrifying Kayako. Gellar reprised her role in The Grudge 2, further cementing her place within horror history.
After spending much of the last decade focusing on television and family-oriented projects, Gellar’s recent return to genre filmmaking has been warmly welcomed by fans who grew up watching her battle vampires, ghosts and masked killers.
The involvement of Radio Silence only makes Thud even more appealing. The filmmaking collective, led by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella, has become one of the most influential forces in modern horror. Their breakout hit Ready or Not became a critical and commercial success in 2019, while their work on Scream (2022) and Scream VI helped breathe new life into Wes Craven’s iconic franchise. More recently, they directed the vampire horror-comedy Abigail, which earned praise for its blend of gore, humour and inventive storytelling.

For many horror fans, the Radio Silence name has become a stamp of quality, particularly when it comes to balancing scares, comedy and strong character work. While they are producing rather than directing Thud, their involvement suggests the project is being developed with the same genre-savvy approach that has made their recent output so popular.
Behind the camera is Mali Elfman, whose road-trip fantasy drama Next Exit earned positive notices following its release. Elfman has also been involved in a number of genre productions as a producer, including Birth/Rebirth, The Haunting of the Queen Mary and Queens of the Dead. She is also the daughter of legendary composer Danny Elfman, whose musical work has become synonymous with fantasy, horror and gothic cinema.
At the moment, Thud remains in the early stages of development, with production expected to take place in Los Angeles. Beyond the unusual central premise, few plot details have been revealed, though the combination of supernatural romance, dark comedy and horror elements certainly sounds unlike anything else currently on the release calendar.

With Sarah Michelle Gellar continuing her return to horror, Radio Silence lending their expertise behind the scenes and an imaginative premise involving the Grim Reaper and the Devil falling in love at a wedding, Thud is already shaping up to be one of the more unusual genre projects on the horizon.
