Bryan Fuller and Mads Mikkelsen Reunite for Fairytale Thriller Dust Bunny
Fans of NBC’s Hannibal have reason to celebrate. Director and showrunner Bryan Fuller has reunited with Mads Mikkelsen for a brand new project, the fairytale-inspired thriller Dust Bunny. The film’s first trailer has just dropped, teasing a strange, chilling story that promises to blur the line between fantasy and nightmare. Dust Bunny will make its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on 9 September as part of the prestigious Midnight Madness line-up before arriving in cinemas on 5 December.

A Dark Fairytale with a Twist
Dust Bunny marks Bryan Fuller’s feature directorial debut, though the filmmaker is hardly a newcomer to visionary storytelling. Best known for his work on Hannibal, Pushing Daisies, and American Gods, Fuller has developed a reputation for blending macabre themes with visual beauty and emotional depth. With Dust Bunny, he turns his attention to the dark side of childhood fears.
The story follows Aurora, played by newcomer Sophie Sloan, a young girl who believes a monster living under her bed has devoured her entire family. Desperate and alone, she turns to her neighbour, portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen, for help. The twist? Her neighbour is a professional hitman, and he suspects that Aurora’s parents may have been collateral damage in an assassination attempt targeting him. To protect her, he joins forces with the child, and together they embark on a perilous journey to confront both literal and metaphorical monsters.
This blend of hitman thriller and childhood fairytale horror sets Dust Bunny apart from traditional genre films. Fuller has described the project as a deeply personal story, touching on themes of trauma, trust, and the blurred lines between reality and imagination.

A Stellar Cast
The cast of Dust Bunny brings together talent from across generations and genres. Mikkelsen, who earned worldwide acclaim for his chilling yet magnetic portrayal of Dr. Hannibal Lecter, once again steps into a morally complex role, balancing menace with surprising humanity.
Joining him is Sigourney Weaver, an icon of science fiction and horror thanks to her legendary role as Ellen Ripley in the Alien franchise. Weaver’s involvement adds significant gravitas and suggests that her character may play a pivotal part in the film’s unfolding mystery.
David Dastmalchian, fresh from his acclaimed performance in Late Night with the Devil, adds another unsettling layer to the ensemble. Known for his ability to inhabit eccentric and often unnerving characters, his role in Dust Bunny is expected to further enhance the film’s eerie tone. Rising talent Sophie Sloan rounds out the main cast as Aurora, with the trailer hinting that her performance will be key to grounding the film’s fantastical elements in genuine emotion.

Fuller and Mikkelsen: A Partnership Fans Have Missed
For many, the biggest draw of Dust Bunny is the reunion between Fuller and Mikkelsen. Their collaboration on Hannibal (2013–2015) turned the series into one of the most critically acclaimed television dramas of the decade, praised for its artful gore, operatic storytelling, and Mikkelsen’s unforgettable take on the iconic cannibal.
The possibility of a Hannibal revival has been discussed frequently in recent years, with Mikkelsen himself openly expressing a desire to return for a fourth season. While Dust Bunny is not connected to that universe, the reunion is bound to rekindle speculation. Fans eager for more of their unique creative chemistry now have a new project to savour in the meantime.
From Festival to Theatrical Release
The premiere of Dust Bunny at TIFF’s Midnight Madness section is fitting. The programme is known for showcasing daring, genre-bending works that push boundaries. Positive word of mouth from the festival could generate momentum heading into its wider theatrical release in December.
With its combination of a fairytale framework, action-thriller undertones, and horror sensibility, Dust Bunny looks set to be one of the most intriguing genre offerings of the year.
Dust Bunny premieres at TIFF on 9 September 2025 and will be released in cinemas on 5 December 2025.
